Haus Margarete-Erden

Background on the House

Our little house in Erden located at the modern address of Hauptstrasse (Main Street) 31 was built in the year 1661. Only a little is known about the house and the family that built the home. It is a typical Mosel farmhouse of the Baroque era being built of slate from the foundation to about the first upper floor. From there it is timber framed with daub and wattle (sticks and Mosel mud with straw mixed in) in-fill. The exterior finish materials have been modernized to better withstand the environment.

You will note as you enter, the symbol above the door representing a wolf trap (which was the family mark and most likely the trade of the builder of this home) placed between the 16 and the 61. As with all the other families in this village, these family symbols were at one time to be found painted on the wall beside the high altar at the village parish church of Saint Anne's. A photo of this mark and the altar can be seen in the book of the history of Erden.

Martin Bauer and Karla Mundt-Bauer purchased the home on November 1, 2005. It was named after Martin's mother, Margarete, who passed away in 2004. She loved the half-timbered homes throughout Germany and always reminded us that people who owned such homes were not really owners, but rather caretakers for future generations.

Visiting Haus Margarete & Erden

Haus Margarete is intended to be a unique vacation rental experience. Built in 1661, the house has been updated with many modern amenities, yet we have tried to retain much of the charm of the past. It is meant to be much more than simply a room to stay in while visiting the Mosel. We hope that our quaint cottage will become your home away from home in the vintners village of Erden and that it will be as much a part of your holiday experience as the wine tastings, bicycle tours or boat excursions for which our area is so famous

Haus Margarete is available for rent year round. Unlike many other properties in the area you are renting a fully furnished family home with a parlor, two bedrooms and a small, but serviceable kitchen. If you need additional space for family gatherings or parties, the cellar is available for evening gatherings or as a cool place to sit on hot days.

The kitchen allows for making breakfast and cooking simple fare. For more elaborate meals, we have excellent restaurants in the area. But if you want to spend a quiet evening dining "at home", please contact Olaf & Ingrid Melcher at "Zur Ratsschenke". For the same price as a meal in their restaurant, they can send over a selection from their menu for you to enjoy in the peace and quiet of Haus Margarete.
